Good Management - Predictive vs Reactive

Good Management - Predictive vs ReactiveGood Management - Predictive vs ReactiveMany managersbelieve that their job is to resolve problemsthat arise. While that is true, it is only the lesser part of the job. More importantly, a managers job is to prevent problems. This is the difference between reactive management, which solves problems as they occur, and predictive management, which tries to prevent many problems from arising in the first place. Reactive Management Reactive management deals with problems as they come up. It is a management style that is much admired for its ability to quickly get the resources back into production, whether those resources are machines or people. If you are good at reactive management, you are Decisive and able to act quickly,Able to find the root cause of events,Creative and able to develop many solutions,Innovative and able to find new ways to solve problems, andCalm and in control in the midst of a crisis. Someone who is good at reactive mana gement is able to remain calm, quickly analyze the problem, and find its root cause. Rather than getting lost in the symptoms, they are able to think up many possible solutions, some proven and some new, and select the best choice. They are equally quick at implementing the solution to resolve the problem. A reactive management style clearly is a desirable skillset for a manager to have. By quickly solving problems they are able to get the people and/or machine quickly back to work and productive again. However, its not the best style. Managers should concentrate on improving their ability in predictive management as well. Predictive Management Predictive management focuses on reducing the number of problems that require reactive management. The mora problems that can be prevented through predictive management, the fewer problems will need to be solved through reactive management. If you are good at predictive management, you are Thoughtful and analytic,Not likely to go chasing after the current panic,More aware of the important than the merely urgent issues,Able to identify patterns in data and patterns of failures,More focused on why did something go wrong, rather than what can be done to fix it, andAble to keep the big picture in mind when working through the details. Someone who is good at predictive management is sufficiently detached that they can identify the conditions that lead to certain problems and can implement procedures to reduce or eliminate the problems. Rather than being concerned about the immediate problem, they are able to relate current conditions to earlier information and predict when problems might arise. A predictive management style is an important ability for a manager to have. The more problems that can be prevented through predictive management, the fewer resources will need to be spent on reacting to problems that have arisen. Predictive management does not replace reactive management, but it reduces the need for it. Getti ng Better At Predictive Management How does a manager get better at predictive management? The best way is practice. Focus some time every day on predictive management and on developing the skills listed above. Heres an example of practicing the predictive management behaviors so you can get better at it. Schedule a meeting with yourself so you can block out a half hour of time. Close your door. Set your phone on do-not-disturb. Turn off your cell phone and pager.Pick the problem that has been the biggest headache for your organization. Then allow yourself to just think about it.?When did it happen most recently? What caused it?What warnings or indicators did we have before it happened? What did we do to fix it?What could we have done to prevent it?What can I do now to reduce the chances of it happening again? Start monitoring the warning signs you noted above. When those signs next appear, apply the previous solution before the problem gets big.Evaluate the results and adjust as need ed. The more you practice predictive management the better you will be at it. You will still need your ability in reactive management, but just not as much. Your resources will be used more on getting things done than on fixing problems and youll have more time to think about and prevent more problems from arising.

Two and five female managers are subjected to sexism

Two and five female managers are subjected to sexismTwo and five female managers are subjected to sexismBefore actual progress is achieved, it invariably enters a weird growing pains period wherein public consciousness defies policy and legislation. The same way racism didnt end when slavery did, sexism wont simply go away because more women are given equal opportunities. On several fronts, our laws are creating a false impression. Of course, its illegal to commit a hate crime in 2019, the same year that doing so is particularly in fashion. Visibility vs. equalityLadders recently reported on the irony of two conflicting developments for members of the LGBTQ community that were separated by literal weeks. One was a study conducted by Burning Glass Technologies thatreported an increased effort to employ LGBTQ friendly listings on behalf of recruiters and firms nationwide. The other, published in the Accelerating Acceptance Report, found that young Americans are less accepting of the que er community than they had been in previous years. Unfortunately, visibility does not, as a rule, mean equality, though its always the best start.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreSimilarly, new research presented by the charity organization,Young Womens Trust found that sexist ideas are seeing professional women remain perpetually held back in the workplace.Despite the promotion of things like gender pay gap reporting, the results featured in this years paper mirror the dissapointing results published in years prior.Joe Levenson, Young Womens Trust campaigns director, had this to say earlier this week to the Independent,Many employers say they are aware of this, yet too few are doing anything to end it. From patronizing remarks to sexual harassment and gender discrimination, sexist cultures only serve to hold women back. This perpetuates gender pay gaps and disadvantages employe rs by limiting their organizations talent pools. The findings were derived from a pool of over 800 managers. One in 10 male respondents of this study sample said that men were better suited for management jobs than women, though one in five men admitted sexism is still prevalent in the professional world. Three percent of women reported agreeing with the 10% of men that felt they were biologically pre-dispositioned to run a business. This position is obviously unsound, but the fact remains only4.9% of Fortune 500 CEOs and 2% of SP 500 CEOs are women-and these numbers are actually decreasing worldwide. To the key point, biases and stereotypes that have long since been embedded into the national disposition, arent soon going to be repudiated by reason.According to an analyst of thousands of 350-degree reviews, women outperformed men on 17 out of 19 characteristics that suggest excellence in leadership roles.CapabilityWomens percentileMens percentileTakes initiative55.648.2Resilience54.7 49.3Practices self-development54.849.6Drives for results53.948.8Displays high integrity and honesty54.049.1Develops others54.149.8Inspires and motivates others53.949.7Bold leadership53.249.8Builds relationships53.249.9Champions change53.149.8Establishes stretch goals52.649.7Collaboration and teamwork52.650.2Connects to the outside world51.650.3Communicates powerfully and prolifically51.850.7Solves problems and analyzes issues51.550.4Leadership speed51.550.5Nearly half of female managers surveyed in the new Young Womens Trust survey said that they believe their workplace is sexist and a sizeable portion feels shutout of opportunities to progress because of it. Levenson reports,Unsurprisingly, women managers are more aware of it than men no doubt because they too experience discrimination. Employers must root out sexism in their organizations and give women an equal chance to succeed. It can be particularly tough in male-dominated workplaces, where employers should help to bring more women in and change the culture through training days, mentoring and even targets.

Pausing therapy reasons why and what you should consider

Pausing therapy reasons why and what you should considerPausing therapy reasons why and what you should considerTherapy is hard work - sometimes the hardest part is just getting started. Therefore, it can be tough to stop before youre ready, but sometimes life happens that way. Your therapist understands that youre busy and things come up when least expected.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreFortunately, if you have to stop or pause therapy, there are ways to make the process less painful. Why Pause Therapy?A number of things could prompt a pause, but common reasons include financial concerns, health problems, schedule conflicts, lack or time, money, or a move. Sometimes the problem isnt with you, but with your therapist. Therapists are people, too - people who may relocate, retire or take a medical leave. When you have to stoptherapybefore youre ready, you will have to consider b oth the logistical and the personal sides of the change. Logistics involve the business-related stuff you will have to do to make the change. Personal matters include how to manage the emotional side of it.The Logistics of a Therapy ChangeMost logistical problems occur when its the therapist who must stop your therapy. But whether its you or your provider, there are several elements to consider.Find a new therapistIf your therapist is leaving a group practice, can you go see another provider in that same practice? If not, can your therapist recommend someone who might be a good fit? You might consideronline therapyas a replacement as well as a way to get matched with a new Talkspace therapist that is right for you.Make arrangements for final payments and/or insurance claimsInsurance filing isnt always done immediately after your appointment and then the company takes even more time to pay the claim. Ask your therapist what happens if problems arise with this process.Find out how to get your recordsTherapists usually dont hand over notes the same way a doctor might give you a vaccination record. Therapists must follow certain guidelines about explaining notes, so you might have to schedule another visit and pay a copying fee. Transferring records directly to another professional is usually faster and cheaper - you only have to sign a release form.Make arrangements for referral sooner rather than laterWait times for mental health services can stretch to weeks or months, especially if your area doesnt have many providers. If youre transferring therapy, follow up on the referral as soon as possible. If youre stopping but hope to go back, keep in mind that you might need to start the process two or three months ahead of time - try not to wait until you have an emergency. The Emotional Side of Pausing TherapyTherapy is such an intensely personal experience that stopping, even when you want to, can be quite unsettling. If you have a great relationship with your ther apist, the change may affect your mood noticeably. Here are some ways to make the transition easier.Ask your therapist about the termination processOften, therapists arrange a specific number of ending sessions to allow time to discuss any feelings this change brings up. In some cases, the termination has to be faster, but its best to have at least one session identified as the end, so you can process the separation at least a little.Think about what you want to cover in the time you have leftYour therapist can help you identify priorities and plan how to address those as much as possible before the relationship ends. You probably wont be able to cover an entirely new topic in depth, but at least you can hit the high points on the work youve already begun.Decide is this just a pause or can you terminate?Any time you plan to take a break, its good to consider whether youre ready to stop altogether. Therapy has great benefits, but sometimes it becomes a comfort zone were afraid to lea ve. Your therapist can help you determine whether you shouldconsider a short-term pauseor a full stop.Address feelings of loss or abandonmentThese common reactions can make the end of therapy a time of sadness or even anger. Many people are surprised by the intensity of these feelings, but your therapist should anticipate them and help you process them. This is why its especially important not to skip final sessions or end treatment abruptly if you can help it.Pausing or ending therapy isnt always ideal, especially when you dont feel ready. Nevertheless, procedures and safeguards within the profession make the process easier. Whatever you feel about it, you wont be the first person to have felt that way. With some forethought, you and your therapist can work together for a gentle end. And remember, you can always return to therapy when the time is right. And if youre interested in therapy that fits your schedule and budget, consider trying online therapy. This article first appeared on Talkspace.

To gift or not to gift That is the workplace question

To gift or not to gift That is the workplace questionTo gift or not to gift That is the workplace questionMany of us are (belatedly) starting to thinkId like to get my anfhrer (or colleague) a gift for the holidays, but what? I dont want it to look like Im trying to gain my boss favor. But I dont want just to give her some token something that will look schmaltzy. What could I get her?Im going to give you some things to think about, some of which may surprise you.First, consider not giving a gift now. Wait, and give them a meaningful gift later, after you have taken time to consider and explore. Thoughtless gifts - those gifts bought hastily in response to tradition or a feeling of obligation - with no real personal investment of time or reflection, not only miss the mark but also communicate a negative katechese. The gift seems to be a perfunctory act and not a real expression of appreciation. Such gifts do little to positively impact others.Ive recently started a friendship with J ohn Ruhlin, and he has written a very thought-provoking book entitled, Giftology, through which he has opened my eyes to the positive ways of giving gifts in business relationships.Unfortunately, in most work settings, the way gifts are given (as well as what is given and when they are given) reinforce my negative view of gifts in the workplace they are either token (without meaning) or self-serving (a form of advertising through logo-laden items) or manipulative. One of the key points John makes is that a gift has more impact when it is not expected - when it arrives as a surprise. Giving a gift now (the Christmas season) is not going to surprise anyone. So, wait maybe until the second half of January.Secondly, as an alternative, write them a note. Not just any thanks for being my boss note, but one where you take some time to think aboutWhat you want to say what do you value about them (how they treat you others, what they do that makes your daily work easier, character qualit ies they have that you admire)how you want to say it think about the words you use, choose them carefully, maybe even utilize a thesaurus to find synonyms of words you usually use the way the message is conveyed if you are like me (my handwriting is terrible), you may want to type it and print it on nice paper for others, a nice handwritten note is special or include a picture that conveys part of the message.Next, take the time and effort to find them a gift that they would enjoy. It may or may not be a thing it could be an experience (tickets to an event or sporting event they would really like gift card to a nicer restaurant than they typically would choose. A truly impactful gift is one that shows you took some time and effort to get a gift that would be meaningful to them. Finally, spring the gift on them at a time they wouldnt expect it (and watch their joy-filled, surprised response). There is a lot more to say, and advice to give about giving gifts well within the context o f a business relationship. Rather than repeat what has already been well-said, go buy Giftology by John Ruhlin. I sincerely doubt anyone will be disappointed. This article was originally published on Appreciation at Work.

The Boyle effect at work

The Boyle effect at work The Boyle effect at workPosted October 13, 2011, by Josie Chun Unless youve been living under a rock, you will have heard of Susan Boyle, the middle-aged Scottish woman, dubbed the hairy angel, who became a global sensation when zu sich astonishing performance on Britains Got Talent was posted on YouTube. The video has exceeded 100 million hits and multitudes from around the world have been moved and delighted by the underdog who became an unlikely star almost overnight, thanks to the wonders of viral video. Even though Boyle didnt go on to win Britains Got Talent (she came second), we can nevertheless revel in her unexpected success. But the question remains why were we, like the judges on the show, all so surprised? Is it because of her frumpy appearance and the fact that she wasnt young, glamorous and packaged in the way we expect successful people to appear? The same phenomenon may also have been at play, at least to some extent, in our initial response to Julie Goodwin, last years winner of MasterChef Australia. Not that theres anything wrong with Goodwins looks only that the matronly, on-the-verge-of-a-nervous-breakdown Goodwin may have seemed like an unlikely winner compared to some of her younger and mora polished competitors. Our initial assumptions about people like Boyle and Goodwin highlight an interesting phenomenon which has been demonstrated in numerous scientific studies, referred to as the beauty premium in a recent study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology. Basically, we judge attractive people more positively deeming them to be more intelligent, more talented and more deserving of reward. Attractive people are treated more favourably and experience more positive outcomes and that includes job outcomes. Taller men receive more promotions, while those judged as plain have been shown to have lower incomes. Also at work is the fact that those who receive deferential treatment from a young age often go on to develop greater confidence and self-esteem, and this in turn generally leads to better employment outcomes. It becomes self-fulfilling prophecy. It hardly seems fair, but this process occurs largely unconsciously and its something we should try to be aware of, both in ourselves and others. Employers need to be especially vigilant against this beauty bias (also known as lookism) when recruiting, as it has been demonstrated that decision-makers privilege attractiveness, regardless of other job-relevant information they have about the people theyre judging. That may mean they pass up a more deserving and suitable candidate for someone who is more physically attractive. In any case, people like Susan Boyle and Julie Goodwin can give all of us hope, as well as reason to reflect. Against the odds, their talent has been recognised and they have risen from obscurity to become unlikely, but deserving, successes. Why You Need to Share Ideas with Your Team ASAP

Why You Need to Share Ideas with Your Team ASAPWhy You Need to Share Ideas with Your Team ASAPWeve all heard office horror stories of someone telling a co-worker an idea, only to have that person steal it and take credit for it when the boss comes around. But did you know that this situation doesnt happen as often as you think- and that not sharing ideas with your co-workers could actually be detrimental to your own success?A new study recently published in the Academy Management Journal found that hiding your ideas doesnt lead to greater personal success- in fact, if anything, it creates a hostile work environment.First, researchers found that idea stealing actually happens way less than people think your co-workers usually dont find your proposals as awesome as you do. (Sorry.) But even mora importantly, hoarding your ideas creates a lose-lose situation, no matter what type of work environment you operate in.For example, if you work in a competitive company culture (called performa nce climate) you may feel like you need to keep things close to the vest to get ahead. But youre not likely to gain from it, because in the tit-for-tat culture that prevails in such settings co-workers will respond in kind and the culprits standing with the boss will probably suffer, says Matej Cerne, one of the papers authors. On the other end of the spectrum, if your company encourages collaboration and cooperation (known as mastery climate), theres little to no incentive to hide suggestions, and doing so can make you look like youre not a kollektiv player. Bottom line? Open your ideas up to the floor- no one is going to steal them, and keeping them in wont do you any good. Better yet, next time youre tempted to hoard your idea, ask someone what he or she thinks of it, and brainstorm together. You might come up with something better than either of you ever thought possible.Photo of lightbulbs courtesy of Shutterstock.

Millennials say 35 years old is their deadline for settling down with a family and job

Millennials say 35 years old is their deadline for settling down with a family and jobMillennials say 35 years old is their deadline for settling down with a family and jobCities including Denver, Milwaukee and Austin have won some renown as being hip and welcoming to young millennials for their quality of life, good transportation, and sometimes, their plentiful access to legal marijuana. But how long will these cities maintain their popularity? There may be an expiration date on their hipness, if a new study is right. The 2017 Mayflower Mover Insights Studyconducted by the American moving company talked to 1000 millennials between 18 and 35 years old and found that 41%of millennials have relocated to a new city without meaning to stay there for good (called vacation movers). Around 53% of the age group reported theyre likely to do so over the course of the next five years.Dr. Jeffrey Arnett, Research Professor in the Department of Psychology at Clark University, said millennials tend to feel less tied down than other generations - perhaps because they largely dont own homes or cars - and so are flexible in where they live.Millennials are a generation of what I call adventure movers. Their motivations for moving are influenced by a sense of adventure, making these moves relatively short-termMore than any generation before them, millennials have defined their 20s as a period of freedom and instability. This flexibility allows millennials to make moves in search of new job opportunities or adventures, even if they dont plan to stay in the long run, Arnett said. The moving company found that young people have specific tendencies when it comes to finding a distribution policy to live, if they plan to stay there, and why.Lifestyle choices come firstOne surprising finding some millennials are moving to try out a city even if they dont have a job yet.Around 74% of millennials said they moved to a new city with the intention of moving out of it in a certain timeframe, with 40% making a vacation move for a new position, 30% for a new lifestyle or experience and 26% did so because they were seeking employment. The purpose of the moves, however, seems to be a bit of a Goldilocks pursuit finding the ideal place to settle and start a life. Thats why 87% of millennials reported that they are aiming to live permanently in the city they live in now, or find a city to live in permanently.Despite studies that show that millennials are not getting married as often, they are still seeking adult milestones, the results of the Mayflower Mover study suggest. Around 78% said age 35 is around when they want to settle down, and among the top reasons for doing so are getting a job they love, getting their dream house or apartment, and getting married. One of the stereotypes about millennials is definitely accurate they prefer urban centers rather than rural areas. For the Mayflower Movers study, 81% percentofparticipants ages 30 to 35 said they currently reside ina b ig city or an innerhalb suburb near the city.Cities millennials likeMayflower also listed the top 10 cities the age group is reportedly flocking to in the news release, based on moves the company carried out between January and December 2016. Big cities are still the big centers of millennial life. The fivemost popularareSan Francisco in first place, Los Angeles second, Washington, D.C. third, Seattle fourth and Chicago fifth. What about the millennials who arent moving? But every young person definitely isnt moving out. It takes money to move, and many millennials are still searching for financial stability, evenprioritizing basic healthcare benefits over other workplace perks.CNBC reported in 2016 that millennials favor personal experiences more than material things, like cars and homes, and are seeking recreation and entertainment options. That being said, someare also livingwith their parents. In 2017,the Pew Research Centerreported thatin 2014, for the first time in more than 130 y ears, adults ages 18 to 34 were slightly more likely to be living in their parents home than they were to be living with a spouse or partner in their own household, which the article largely attributed to the decrease of young Americans who are choosing to settle down romantically before age 35.
